JeansweredevelopedinAmericain1853,whenLeviStrausscametoSanFranciscotoopenawestcoastbranchofhisbrothers’NewYorkdrygoodsbusiness.OneofLevi’scustomerswasJacobDavis,atailorwhofrequentlypurchasedboltsofclothfromtheLeviStrauss&Cowholesalehouse.AfteroneofJacob’scostumerskeptpurchasingclothtoreinforcetornpants,hehadanideatousecopperrivetstoreinforcethepointsofstrain,suchasonthepocketcornersandatthebaseofthebuttonfly.Jacobsdidnothavetherequiredmoneytopurchaseapatent,sohewrotetoLevisuggestingthattheybothgointobusinesstogether.AfterLeviacceptedJacobsoffer,onMay20,1874,thetwomenreceivedpatent#139,121fromtheUnitedStatesPatentandTrademarkOffice,andthebluejeanwasborn.
Jeanshavebeenoftencomparedtofour-wheeldrivevehiclesandhikingboots,becausetheycangoanywhere.Levisareknownfortheirruggedconstruction,personal"shrink-to-fit",andversatility.Originallywornbyminers,farmers,andcowboys,Levisarenowworninallwalksoflife.
