UnitedNationsDaywasestablishedbyPresidentialProclamation（总统令）tocommemoratetheestablishmentoftheUnitedNationsin1945.
ItiscelebratedverygenerallyinallstatesandAmericanpossessions,andbyalleighty-onecountries,whicharemembersoftheUnitedNationsforthepurposeofinformingthepeopleoftheworldastotheaims,purposes,andachievementsoftheUN.
Thename"UnitedNations"wasdevisedbyUnitedStatesPresidentFranklinD.Rooseveltandwasfirstusedinthe"DeclarationbyUnitedNations"ofJanuary1,1942,duringtheSecondWorldWar,whenrepresentativesof26nationspledgedtheirgovernmentstocontinuefightingtogetheragainsttheAxisPowers（轴心国）.
Therepresentativesof50countriesattheUnitedNationsConferencedrewuptheUnitedNationsCharter（联合国宪章）onInternationalOrganization,whichmetatSanFranciscofromApril25toJune26,1945.ThosedelegatesdeliberatedonthebasisofproposalsworkedoutbytherepresentativesofChina,theSovietUnion,andUnitedKingdomintheUnitedStatesatDumbartonOaks（敦巴顿橡树园，在美国首都华盛顿效区）fromAugusttoOctoberof1944.Therepresentativesofthe50countriessignedtheCharteronJune26,1945.Poland,whichwasnotrepresentedattheConference,signeditlaterandbecameonetheoriginal51MemberStates.
TheUnitedNationsofficiallycameintoexistenceonOctober24,1945,whentheCharterhadbeenratifiedbyChina,France,TheSovietUnion,theUnitedKingdom,UnitedStatesandbyamajorityofothersignatories.UnitedNationsDayiscelebratedonOctober24eachyear.
Inordertostressthecharter"simportance,in1947theGeneralAssemblyoftheU.N.passedaresolutionthatOctober24shallhereafter（从此以后）beofficiallycalledUnitedNationsDay,andshallbedevotedtomakingknowntothepeopleoftheworldtheaimsandachievementsoftheUnitedNations,andtogainingtheirsupportfortheworkoftheUnitedNations.
Itwasapparent,andalsoquiteimportant,thatthegeneralpublicshouldbeinformedaboutthecontentandpurposesoftheUnitedNations;thereforeanentireweek-UnitedNationsWeek-wassetasideinOctober,withitschiefobservance（庆祝）onUnitedNationsDay,October24.
By1956,theAmericancommitteefortheUnitedNationspromotedthecelebrationofUnitedNationsweek.TheofficialAmericanAssociationfortheUnitedNationssentoutinformationandsuggestionsforprogramswiththisadvice:ThisisUnitedNationsWeek.ThesuccessoftheUnitedNationsinbuildingworldpeacedependsonallofus-onourwonunderstandingandsupport;knowhowitworks,andwhatitisdoing.HelptheUnitedNationshelpallofustoapeacefulfuture.
Insometownsthereisapublicrally（集会）,perhapsattheCityHall,withtheStarsandStripesdisplayedwiththeflagoftheUnitedNations.Speakersstresstheaccomplishmentsoftheorganization.Someshopwindowsfeatureproductsanddressofotherlands.Atownmayputonan"InternationalFestival"withsongsanddances.Duringtheweekthereareforumsandpaneldiscussions.AnenjoyblendingforUnitedNationsDayisabanquetwithforeigndishes.
Animportantpartoftheweek"sobservanceisthesettingupofinformationcenters,whereliteratureontheworkoftheUnitedNationsmaybeobtained.
