Tenyearsago,ontheeveofWorldPopulationDay,anewcampaignwaslaunchedtoraiseawarenessofhowinternationalfamilyplanninghelpssavewomenandchildren’slives,safeguardtheenvironment,andslowpopulationgrowth.179governmentscommittedtoitwhentheysignedtheProgramofActionofICPD,whichprescribesthestepsthatwillnotonlysavemillionsofwomen’slivesbutempower(授权,使能够)societiestoachieveabetterfuture.
Today,therearemorethan6billionpeopleontheplanet,withhalfoftheworld’spopulationundertheageof25-atorjustreachingtheirchildbearing(分娩)years.
Nearly600,000womenstilldieeachyearfrompregnancy-relatedcauses.Andanestimated90percentofinfantswhosemothersdieatchildbirthwillnotsurvivetotheirfirstbirthday.
Wildspeciesarebecomingextinct50to100timesfasterthantheynaturallywould,becauseoftheimpactofrapidpopulationgrowthandincreasedpopulationdensityinmanycountries.
Thoughpopulationgrowthisslowingworldwide,morethan90percentofcurrentgrowthoccursinthedevelopingworldwhereneedsaregreatandresourcesarescarce.Andthesenationshaveahugeunmetneedforfamilyplanningservices-over150millionmarriedwomenofreproductiveageinthedevelopingworldindicatethattheywouldprefertopostponechildbearingbutarenotusinganymethodofcontraception.
