Tenyearsago,ontheeveofWorldPopulationDay,anewcampaignwaslaunchedtoraiseawarenessofhowinternationalfamilyplanninghelpssavewomenandchildren’slives,safeguardtheenvironment,andslowpopulationgrowth.179governmentscommittedtoitwhentheysignedtheProgramofActionofICPD,whichprescribesthestepsthatwillnotonlysavemillionsofwomen’slivesbutempower（授权,使能够）societiestoachieveabetterfuture.
Today,therearemorethan6billionpeopleontheplanet,withhalfoftheworld’spopulationundertheageof25-atorjustreachingtheirchildbearing（分娩）years.
Nearly600,000womenstilldieeachyearfrompregnancy-relatedcauses.Andanestimated90percentofinfantswhosemothersdieatchildbirthwillnotsurvivetotheirfirstbirthday.
Wildspeciesarebecomingextinct50to100timesfasterthantheynaturallywould,becauseoftheimpactofrapidpopulationgrowthandincreasedpopulationdensityinmanycountries.
Thoughpopulationgrowthisslowingworldwide,morethan90percentofcurrentgrowthoccursinthedevelopingworldwhereneedsaregreatandresourcesarescarce.Andthesenationshaveahugeunmetneedforfamilyplanningservices-over150millionmarriedwomenofreproductiveageinthedevelopingworldindicatethattheywouldprefertopostponechildbearingbutarenotusinganymethodofcontraception.
"Girlborntodayinthedevelopingworldfacesbetterprospectsthanagirlwhowasborn10yearsago.Schoolenrolmentratesareincreasing,mortalityisdecliningandlifeexpectancy（平均寿命）isrising,moreandmorewomenandcouplesareabletochoosethenumberandspacingoftheirchildrenandmanycountriesaretakingadditionalstepstoconfrontHIV/AIDS.Butprogressisuneven,andinsomecasesslippingbackwards.Weneedthestrengthanddeterminationofamarathon（马拉松赛跑）runnertomeetourgoalsduringthenextdecade."
