TheOpladenerBierborsegoesbackto1987,i.e.177yearslater,whenHerbertSondermann,anativeofOpladen,hadtheideaofintroducingabeereventandputthisintoeffectintheformofasmalleventwithsevenbeerstandsinthepedestrianprecinctinOpladen.Atthattimeaswell,nobodyanticipatedwhatawonderfuleventwastodevelopfromthesebeginnings.Today,HerbertSondermannwearstheBundesverdienstkreuz(OrderofMerit)oftheFederalRepublicofGermanyforhisservicestoOpladen;becausethesmallbeereventinthepedestrianprecinctinOpladenhasnowbecomethelargestopen-aireventinthehistoryofthecityofLeverkusenandthelargesteventofthiskindanywhereintheworld.
Inmorethantenyearsofdevelopmentwork,theBierborsehasbeendeveloped,accordingtostringentrulesandnumerousselectioncriteria,intooneofthemostsuccessfulGermanpublicfestivalswithoutanyblendingwithothertypesofeventsuchasfunfairsorevenjunkmarkets.ThisalsoillustrateshowitdiffersfromtheMunchenerOktoberfest.
