CongressvotedArmisticeDayafederalholidayin1938,20yearsafterthewarended.ButAmericansrealizedthatthepreviouswarwouldnotbethelastone.WorldWarIIbeganthefollowingyearandnationsgreatandsmallagainparticipatedinabloodystruggle.AftertheSecondWorldWar,ArmisticeDaycontinuedtobeobservedonNovember11.
In1953townspeopleinEmporia(恩波里亚城),KansascalledtheholidayVeterans"Dayingratitudetotheveteransintheirtown.Soonafter,Congresspassedabill(法案)introducedbyaKansascongressmanrenamingthefederalholidaytoVeterans"Day.1971PresidentNixondeclareditafederalholidayonthesecondMondayinNovember.
AmericansstillgivethanksforpeaceonVeterans"Day.Thereareceremoniesandspeechesandat11:00inthemorning,mostAmericansobserveamomentofsilence,rememberingthosewhofoughtforpeace.
AftertheUnitedStates"involvementintheVietnamWar,theemphasisonholidayactivitieshasshifted.Therearefewermilitaryparadesandceremonies.VeteransgatherattheVietnamVeteransMemorial(越战阵亡将士纪念碑)inWashington,D.C.toplacegiftsandstandquietvigil(守夜)atthenamesoftheirfriendsandrelativeswhofellintheVietnamWar.Familieswhohavelostsonsanddaughtersinwarsturntheirthoughtsmoretowardpeaceandtheavoidanceoffuturewars.
VeteransofmilitaryservicehaveorganizedsupportgroupssuchastheAmericanLegionandVeteransofForeignWars.OnVeterans"DayandMemorialDay,thesegroupsraisefundsfortheircharitableactivities.
