EveryyearfromJuly6through14,hundredsofthousandsofrevelers,dancingtotraditionalpipebands,packintothecenterofPamplonatokickoffSpain’smostfamousbull-runningfiestainhonoroftheNavarrecapital’spatronsaint,SanFermin.Spainstagesmorethan3,000fiestasayear--everythingfromfirewalkingtogoat-throwing--butninedaysofpartyingandrunningwiththebullsatPamplonastilltriumphsintermsofspectacleandrecklessness.
SoonafterdaybreakonJuly7,braverunners(somemightsaystupidrunners)dashaheadoffightingbullsastheyrun825meters(halfamile)betweenthecorralwherethebullsarekepttothebullringwheretheywillbekilledbymatadorslaterintheday.Runnersaimtofeelthebreathofthebullsontheirbacks,andsomeevengoadtheanimalsbyswattingthemwithrolledupnewspapers--allwhiletryingtoavoidbeinggoredortrampled.
TheSanFerminfestivalisreportedtohavebeganin1591whenitspurposewaspurelypractical,tomovethebullstothearena.Thedifferencewasthatthenonlyahandfulofdaringsoulsranthegauntletinfrontofthefrenziedbeasts.ThetraditionwasimmortalizedinErnestHemingway’snovelTheSunAlsoRisesin1926,afterwhichtimemanymoreforeignersbeganattendingthefestivalandrunningwiththebulls.
