TartanpatternshavebeenusedinScottishweavingforcenturies.Formanycenturies,thepatternswereassociatedwiththeweaversofaparticulararea.ThenamingandregistrationofofficialclantartansdidnotbeginuntiltheHighlandromanticrevivalofthe19thcenturywasfosteredbyWalterScottandspurredbythepageantryheinventedforthevisitofKingGeorgeIVofGreatBritaintoEdinburgh.
ThetartanofaScottishclanisasequenceofcolorsandshadesuniquetothematerial,authorisedbytheclansocietyforusebymembersofthatclanforkilts,ties,andothergarmentsanddecorations.Everyclanwithasociety,hasatleastonedistincttartan.While"heraldic"inthesenseofbeingvisualrepresentationofbloodrelation,theyarenot"Scottishheraldry",strictlyspeaking.InScotland,heraldryisprotectedunderthelawbythecourtoftheLordLyon,KingofArms,andtherearepenaltiesforbearinganunauthorisedCoatofarms.Ontheotherhand,thereisnoblanketlegalprohibitionagainstwearingthe"wrong"tartan.Itisconsideredpropertowearaclantartanifthewearerisassociatedwiththeclanbyname,bybloodorbylegaladoption.
Inadditiontotheclantartans,traditionreservessomepatternsforusebyScottishHighlandmilitaryunitsoftheUnitedKingdomandCommonwealthcountries.
